![]() The Nespresso Original line machine serves Lungo which is about 3.7 oz in size and the Nespresso Vertuo line machine serves Gran Lungo (5oz). Lungo means long in Italian so it is essentially a longer version of Espresso. Although at the moment, maybe that is not so much of an issue. What is Gran Lungo Gran Lungo is a variation of Espresso that is bigger in size about 5 oz. It's worth noting that unlike the standard sized Nespresso capsules, these Vertuo ones don't turn up in most supermarkets. Not cheap, granted, but there’s nothing better out there for outright convenience and versatility. ![]() Vertuo capsules retail between 39p (single espresso) and 67p (Alto). This writer prefers standard single-shot espressos so I stick rigidly to the strongest Diavolitto blend (intensity 11) which is wonderfully aromatic with a great palette-smacking kick. A lungo increases both numbers, using a whopping 130 to 170 ml and taking around a minute to pull. An ordinary shot of espresso uses between 25 and 60 ml of water and takes 18 to 30 seconds to make. It has to be said that, while some of the flavours are rich and aromatic, others are too chocolaty or tainted with some other added ingredient. Lungo is a type of espresso that uses twice as much water as a standard shot and extracts for about twice as long. However, the good news is that there are 29 aromas across the entire range of pods, so chances are you’ll always find the blend that’s right for you. Simply put, Gran Lungo is a type of coffee capsule designed specifically for Nespresso machines. For instance, the Mug range comes in 11 flavours while the single Espresso only has four and the Double Espresso just two. To make matters a little confusing, some capsules are available in more flavours (or aromas) than others. As explained above, each capsule comes with a different barcode which the machine reads before extracting the perfect dose. ![]() Lungo coffees are delicious as a latte or with just a dash of milk. The smoothness and sweetness of your coffee is enhanced with the fluffy foam and creamy consistency of milk. If you like to add milk to your coffee, then Nespresso Lungo is a fine choice. The single-shot Espresso capsule produces 40ml of coffee, the Double Espresso 80ml, the Gran Lungo 150ml, the Mug 230ml and the Alto a whopping 414ml. All you need is a large cup (110ml or more) at the ready. The Vertuo range is made up of three different sized capsules capable of delivering five different types of extraction: Espresso, Double Espresso, Gran Lungo, Mug and extra large Alto. ![]()
